LDPC FEC Code Extension for Unequal Error Protection in DVB-T2 System: Design and Evaluation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Digital Video Broadcasting organisation has recently introduced the second generation of terrestrial broadcast transmission standards, DVB-T2. The newly introduced tools ensure significant gain in performance of DVB-T2 compared to the first generation variant of the standard. One of these tools is the new physical layer concatenated forward error correction code. The inner among the concatenated codes is the Low-Density Parity Check code. The paper proposes a method to extend this code so varying coding strength inside one physical layer pipe of DVB-T2 is enabled in a backward compatible way. As consequence, unequal error protection transmission scheme at a physical layer of DVB-T2 can be efficiently deployed. The paper provides a step-by-step description of the design procedure of the extension. Moreover, the modification to the processing chain and the framing structure of DVB-T2, that ensures backward compatibility to the legacy system, is provided. The proposed method is evaluated under AWGN channel and TU6 channel. Experiments performed on four different video sequences show significant improvements in quality of experience when the proposed extension is used to achieve UEP transmission.

Opportunistic Error Correction for OFDM-Based DVB Systems
DVB-T2 (second generation terrestrial digital video broadcasting) employs LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) codes combined with BCH (Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquengham) codes, which has a better performance in comparison to convolutional and Reed-Solomon codes used in other OFDM-based DVB systems. However, the current FEC layer in the DVB-T2standard is still not optimal. In this paper, we propose a novel...

The combination of powerful error correcting codes such as (LDPC) codes and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) has been widely deployed in wireless communication standards such as the IEEE 802.11n and DVB-T2. Recently, several Unequal Error Protection schemes which exploit non-uniform degree distribution of bit nodes in irregular LDPC codes have been proposed. In parallel, schemes that explo...

Both constant and variable Forward Error Correcting (FEC) coding is provided by the DVB-S2 system. Variable FEC can be used for different levels of error protection according to different applications. DVB-S2 system [15] is intended to provide interactive services, which are mainly point-to-point or point-to multipoint, where variable FEC may be combined with the use of return channels, to achi...
متن کاملEfficient FEC Protection of Scalable Media Streams in DVB-H
In this paper, we discuss the deployment of SVC in DVB-H. We focus on the system configuration aspects, in order to improve the receiver performance in terms of perceived video quality and resulting power consumption. We evaluate a set of different multiplexing and FEC protection strategies in a simulation environment. We show that interleaved transmission combined with carefully configured une...
متن کاملComparison of Error Protection Methods for Audio-Video Broadcast over DVB-H
The paper discusses methods for robust audio-video broadcast over the digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVB-H) system. DVB-H includes a link-layer forward error correction (FEC) scheme known as multiprotocol encapsulation (MPE) FEC, which provides equal error protection (EEP) to the transmitted media streams. Several approaches for unequal error protection (UEP) have been proposed in the lit...
